Microsoft has announced it is planning to open a new cloud-computing data centre region in Georgia.

The region in the US will be part of the company’s move to expand its presence in Atlanta and as a result, will see the area become Microsoft’s third largest hub in America.

The other two hubs are located in in Puget Sound and Silicon Valley.

Microsoft will call the new region East US 3 and there are plans to extend it across Fulton and Douglas Counties.

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of cloud operations and innovation, Noelle Walsh, said:

“We’re continuing to see growing interest and use cases across industries and sectors to use Microsoft’s cloud services for remote work, collaboration and innovation to drive greater business efficiencies”

She added the hub would deliver “world-class data security and privacy” as well as faster access to services.

The region will deliver on Microsoft’s promise for independent power, cooling and networking. This helps to better protect customer data from outages or unplanned downtime.

Microsoft added East US 3 will be a large-scale project and will require careful planning to ensure operations in the region meet the company’s commitments to sustainability.
