Reddit is positioning itself as a platform that prioritizes human conversation to drive trust, discovery, and commerce.
During its Q1 2026 earnings call, the community platform provider emphasized that as AI-generated content accelerates, authentic human insight is now becoming a critical differentiator in how customers research, evaluate, and make purchasing decisions.
By shifting toward experience models rooted in trust and peer validation, Reddit is re-embedding trust back into the discovery phase of the customer journey, before a brand interaction even begins.
Steven Huffman, CEO at Reddit, highlights that human conversations are becoming more valuable to customers when making buying decisions as AI-generated content becomes normalized.
“As AI becomes more prevalent, people increasingly seek out real human perspectives and in turn, AI models rely on these perspectives to train and power their products,” he explained.
“Scarce assets tend to become more valuable over time and authentic human conversation at scale is becoming increasingly rare.”
Using AI to Power Discovery, Not Replace
In Q1, Reddit shifted its approach to how AI is shaping the customer journey, using AI to improve how users can discover conversations, communities, and answers across the platform, without eroding the value of human conversations.
As users are being increasingly exposed to AI-powered search and summarization tools online, the platform has discovered that many still seek human validation before making decisions.
Jennifer Wong, COO at Reddit, argues that users still rely on human perspectives to validate, contextualize, and build trust in those AI-generated insights before making decisions.
“While people are using AI-summarized information, people are also increasingly wanting to see and incorporate a breadth of perspectives from other people into their decision-making,” she explained
“People are coming to Reddit to validate what they read and hear elsewhere, including the responses they get from LLMs.”
These decisions have already proven to be influencing platform engagement, with weekly active global users almost at 500 million, increasing 30% year-over-year, the platform is now able to position search as a key driver of retention and daily usage.
Rather than AI replacing discussion, the technology is helping users by surfacing the most relevant threads faster, guiding them to authentic perspectives at moments of high intent.
By improving access and context while ensuring that decision-making remains grounded in human insight, this approach will help reintroduce trust into social platforms, particularly as consumers increasingly question the reliability of AI-generated content alone.
Turning Products Into Natural Conversations
AI is also becoming central to Reddit’s advertising and commerce strategy in Q1, improving how well commercial content aligns with user intent.
This is shown strongly in Q1 results, with roughly 40% of conversations on Reddit are now commercial in nature, with the platform seeing an increase in various discussions on products, services and purchase decisions.
With the commercial journey becoming less forced on social platforms, ads and product discovery are now beginning to feel more connected to the discussion and user needs rather than being separate from it.
By not manufacturing consumer demand for short term gains, Reddit is using AI to identify existing intent within trusted communities and connect that intent to relevant advertisers.
“And these conversations are uniquely influential. 84% of shoppers say they feel more confident in their decisions after researching on Reddit,” explained Huffman.
“When you combine these two things, engage communities and commercial intent, you create a powerful environment for advertisers.”
For CX leaders, this reflects a broader shift toward commerce experiences that feel less like marketing and more like informed decision support.
Human Authenticity Remains Reddit’s AI Moat
Reddit’s long-term advantage now comes from protecting and scaling authentic human conversation rather than from focusing on building generative interfaces.
With the platform rooted in more than two decades of user-generated discussion, Reddit’s position in the AI landscape is increasingly defined by the value of its human conversations, an asset that is becoming more valuable as customer demands increase.
And with over 25 billion posts and comments now on Reddit, platform is also valuable to users for its knowledge base, with Huffman noting that the platform’s communities can now “generate the equivalent of Wikipedia’s entire content library in new content” every month.
As a result, this depth and diversity of human perspective fuels discovery and commerce on the platform, whilst making Reddit a foundational resource for the broader AI ecosystem
“Reddit’s conversations are like oil for the modern Internet,” Huffman continued.
“A foundational resource powering the next generation of technology.”
Despite search success, many are still reportedly using the platform in a task-based way, showing up to the platform to solve an immediate problem then leave.
To ensure users spend more time on the platform, the company now needs to focus its efforts on increasing engagement, rather than just weekly traffic.
This can look like introducing strategies such as personalized recommendations, search relevance, community onboarding, notifications and re-engagement, and faster paths into relevant conversations.
By encouraging users to return more often and make the platform a part of their daily habit, Reddit will be in a much better position to accelerate user engagement and discovery.
“On the user side, we are making steady progress, but we still have work to do to increase frequency and accelerate growth toward the levels we see on leading platforms,” notes Huffman.
