Yelp has today expanded the capabilities of Yelp Host, enhancing its phone-based pickup ordering with more personalized and multilingual capabilities.
By helping restaurants manage high call volumes without pulling employees away from in-person hospitality experiences, the company is now targeting the missed calls and fragmented experiences that can undermine restaurant service.
CX leaders should now think about moving away from deploying AI without first considering whether it resolves customer needs accurately, contextually, and with an appropriate path to human support.
Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, Chief Product Officer at Yelp, highlighted that this new design will help restaurants avoid missed customer opportunities.
“Many restaurants struggle to answer every call, leading to missed reservations and lost orders that hurt their business,” he said.
“Grounded in Yelp’s trusted business data and designed to get smarter with every interaction, Yelp Host addresses this need by helping restaurants manage every inquiry and understanding each restaurant’s needs in a way generic solutions can’t match.”
Missed Calls is a Recipe for Friction
The current CX demands on restaurants have made the telephone channel irrelevant, where customers now inquire over reservations, requirements, availability, and special accommodations.
At the same time, restaurants are operating with leaner teams along with increasing pressure to deliver high quality in-person service, meaning calls during peak hours are often left unanswered or delayed, creating unnecessary points of friction.
These potential losses in revenue can worsen this issue and decrease team sizes even further, meaning that when calls are eventually answered, staff are frequently required to interrupt food service or hospitality tasks to respond to routine.
With many operators unable to financially justify increasing staffing levels, this constant switching between serving guests in person and handling telephone enquiries reduces operational efficiency can negatively affect CX in both channels, particularly difficult during customer spikes.
In fact, Yelp’s Host platform reportedly processed more than 40,000 calls during Mother’s Day weekend alone, with spikes often difficult to handle using manual processes without additional employees.
Furthermore, fragmentation means employees may need to switch between systems, as well as language barriers introducing additional complexity in diverse communities or tourist destinations.
From a CX perspective, restaurants that cannot meet their customer expectations can cause the dining experience to feel unreliable before the customer journey has begun.
For restaurants aiming to solve this crisis, designing a service model that can handle customer enquiries without compromising quality remains a significant challenge.
From Call to Kitchen
Today, Yelp’s expansion of Yelp Host sees voice AI becoming an operational layer that connects customer conversations directly with restaurant management systems to complete common customer requests.
Having originally launched the platform in October 2025, Yelp Host has reportedly handled over one million calls, as call volumes grew by an average of 38% month over month in June 2026, with organizations watching automated voice interactions becoming a more accepted part of restaurant operations.
The expansion includes an integration with OpenTable, enabling bookings to be synchronised automatically for reduced administrative work and lowering human error risks.
Ramesh explained:
“We remain devoted to evolving Yelp Host to meet the needs of restaurants, and now with reservations through OpenTable and native food ordering, we’re able to serve even more types of restaurants, helping them save time, serve guests better, and operate more smoothly.”
Yelp Host can give greater flexibility to fill restaurant capacity by accessing both online and in-house table inventory, creating a more connected experience for customers while helping operators maximise occupancy.
The platform also offers new takeaway capabilities by allowing customers to place pickup orders entirely over the phone with an AI, able to answer menu questions, accommodate requests, schedule future pickup times, and send completed orders directly to the kitchen.
For restaurants, this expansion enables them to retain control over payment workflows by choosing how customers pay and using AI reduces manual order entry with consistent information flowing to the kitchen staff.
Furthermore, Yelp Host ensures enhanced accessibility and flexibility, offering CX support in 16 additional languages, automatic language detection, eight new voice options, and custom branded voices to allow restaurants to tailor interactions for different customer groups.
Intelligent call routing ensures that more complex enquiries are transferred directly to the appropriate employee rather than creating unnecessary handoffs.
These additions move voice AI beyond basic call answering and toward a service model where routine customer interactions are resolved efficiently while staff can deliver empathy-driven hospitality where human expertise adds irreplaceable value.
Serving Better Customer Journeys
For customers, integrated voice AI offers reliability with restaurant services whenever they need them, enabling reservations or orders to made and amended, as well as request and queries to be answered without lengthy hold times or repeated attempts.
This update creates a more consistent customer journey, particularly during busy periods and for multilingual support while helping restaurants deliver a service that does not appear inconsistent or generic.
For CX leaders, this represents a shift in how voice automation should be evaluated, rather than deflecting contacts or reduce labour costs, customer journeys should be redesigned so routine interactions become more accurate and convenient.
Speaking with CX Today, Andy Grindstaff, Director of Enterprise Product at Global Payments, stressed that hospitality must remain central as restaurants introduce technology to streamline customer interactions.
“I think it is so critical that we still keep hospitality at the center of what we’re doing, and I think there are ways you can do that gracefully with technology,” he noted.
“I’ve seen it work very well to be personal, but it needs to be thought through with the guest in mind and the employee in mind.”
In restaurant CX, success depends on leaders identifying the most common customer intents to ensuring the relevant AI can resolve them reliably and define when calls should be transferred for human expertise.
Leaders should also monitor metrics that reflect customer outcomes, where Yelp’s expanded reporting capabilities provide greater visibility into these by helping restaurants assess whether voice AI is improving both operational efficiency and guest experience.
