Wipro Creates 20,000 More Employees with AI Without Replacing Its Existing Workforce
Gobal technology services provider, Wipro, is claiming that AI has created capacity equivalent to 20,000 employees.
Whilst this news, if true, could be a justified-enough excuse to replace employees, the company has announced its decision to redeploy rather than remove, shifting toward a “human-AI operating model”.
With AI layoffs now becoming a number one trend within the tech and CX space, those that can retain employees whilst adapting to technology shifts will be in a better position when the next technology trend arrives.
With more than 100,000 of its employees currently receiving AI training, Wipro’s frontline customer service workers are now encouraged to manage multiple AI agents, move into different projects, or develop new skills that continue to benefit CX.
By introducing workforce redesign over replacement, WEM leaders in similar positions will need to rethink their staff models by reworking teams around the advancements of AI, deploying frontline workers to more complex, human-driven tasks.
Microsoft Brings Workforce Management Into the AI Conversation
On September 3rd, Microsoft announced its new WEM MCP tools for Dynamics 365 Service Agent, bringing routine workforce tasks into the same conversational AI interfaces employees already use.
This enables supervisors and agents to manage workforce tasks through natural language in Copilot, Teams, and Outlook, enabling staff to request time off, and swap and bid on shifts.
With workforce management becoming more conversational and embedded in everyday employee workflows, agents and supervisors no longer need to navigate separate workforce-management screens for routine requests.
When AI becomes an interface between employees and workforce systems, this makes WEM more accessible for frontline employees while reducing administrative work for supervisors.
Microsoft notes that schedule visibility, leave balances, and clock-in/out capabilities are planned for future releases.
Genesys Brings Agentic AI Into the Workforce
On September 2nd, Genesys announced enhancements to its Agentic Virtual Agent to move beyond answering customer questions and toward reasoning through complex requests, taking actions, and completing multi-step workflows.
By taking on workforce capacity, Genesys says customers are using Agentic Virtual Agent to automate more complex interactions, with one customer reporting more than 400% productivity improvement without adding staff.
From here, the virtual agent can now access CRM, ERP, ITSM, knowledge, billing, and other systems for the customer while coordinating with other AI agents to complete multistep tasks.
This expansion will likely mean that WFM teams will instead need to forecast its combined capacity of human and AI workforces to decide where work should be routed if AI can take on more tasks.
Genesys has already made previous workforce enhancements to its platform, including employee performance, quality assurance, and conversational intelligence.
