ChatGPT is again at the center of significant discourse across the enterprise tech sector.
Earlier this month, OpenAI released ChatGPT Record mode, sparking online speculation that it could commoditize sales and conversational intelligence platforms.
ChatGPT Record mode allows workers to capture audio from meetings, gain summaries, and extract insights like key conversation topics and action items.
The concern is that, as these capabilities become more accessible, tech buyers may think: “Why invest in a separate service when the functionality is now native to my everyday tool?”
Those arguing this suggest that brands may no longer buy intelligence platforms, but features instead, running a stake through the heart of the conversational intelligence market.
Matt Firestone, a Sales Development Manager at Minded, took to LinkedIn to raise the issue, “It’s [about] choosing features, ones that show up where you already are, without extra cost.
Gong is a great use case here, not because they failed, but because of the way AI is changing the landscape.
The Death of Gong? Hold Your Horses
Many will argue that ChatGPT already entered this arena with its Deep Research capability.
The tool acts as a research assistant, scouring online and first-party data sources, synthesizing that information, and creating comprehensive reports.
Yet, these tools are a security and compliance nightmare to deploy, and – despite the rapid evolution of these technologies – enterprises will struggle to implement them at scale.
As such, death prophecies for the likes of Gong are likely long-term, not short-term. Moreover, as Nicolas de Kouchkovsky, Industry Analyst at CaCube Consulting, explained on LinkedIn: “Gong has long moved beyond conversational intelligence, repositioning as a revenue intelligence platform and now expanding into revenue execution.
And the category? It’s been evolving for years…. [Conversational intelligence] is increasingly a feature embedded in broader sales and revenue platforms. But, the space is far from dead. In fact, it’s grown to over 80 players.
What’s All the Fuss About? The Core Features of ChatGPT’s Call Record
Putting the discourse aside, OpenAI has created a lot of noise with ChatGPT Call Record.
As suggested, ChatGPT Record transcribes and summarizes meetings, voice notes, and brainstorms, integrating seamlessly with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Gmail, and Google Calendar.
Summaries are saved in chat history and can be transformed into project plans, emails, or even code.
ChatGPT can also reference past chats and transcripts to offer more relevant and contextual responses over time.
It is currently available to Enterprise, Edu, Team, and Pro workspaces.
So, whether this is a death knell for the likes of Gong or just another evolution in the world of sales intelligence remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: OpenAI is continuing to innovate and disrupt the market.
