WhatsApp is making moves in the customer engagement space, with South America leading the way.

Announced in late 2022, WhatsApp revealed that consumers in Brazil would be able to find, message, and buy from businesses – transforming the company from a private messaging app into a critical customer experience channel.

Launched by Meta, the latest update will allow the WhatsApp Business Platform to house the entire shopping experience, drastically lowering the customer journey effort by eliminating tasks such as finding the company’s contact details and typing that into their contacts.

With WhatsApp already being deployed by many companies as a customer service channel, this latest update is a natural addition that will enable organizations to consolidate their commerce and CX offerings within one platform.

It is clear that Meta is serious about this venture, with the tech giant following up the original announcement with news in the summer of 2023 that it will be removing Facebook account requirements for its WhatsApp Business app.

This update will allow end-users to get started with the WhatsApp Business Platform simply with an email and a form of payment – simplifying the process and opening the system up to a whole new array of non-Facebook-using customers.

With over 200 million customers currently using the WhatsApp Business app, if Meta is able to expand its latest update to larger markets outside of Brazil, such as India and the EU, it has the potential to completely reshape the digital customer engagement landscape.

By emulating China’s WeChat model of enabling customers to network, shop, and make mobile payments all from the app, Meta can challenge the power of the traditional search engine giants and become the go-to customer service and commerce solution.

In discussing the news at the time, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, commented:

“The ultimate goal here is to make it so you can find, message, and buy from a business all in the same WhatsApp chat.”
