OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new business unit built to help enterprises put AI to work in critical workflows, indicating a sharper push into hands-on implementation and services as competition heats up with rivals like Anthropic.
OpenAI said the new division, which has launched with more than $4BN of initial investment, will embed Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) directly inside customer organizations to help integrate AI models with internal systems, business processes, governance controls and operational workflows.
OpenAI has also agreed to acquire AI consulting and engineering firm Tomoro, adding around 150 deployment specialists to the initiative.
According to OpenAI, the Deployment Company is designed to move enterprises from experimentation into production-scale deployment. The unit will operate as a standalone business while remaining closely tied to OpenAI’s research and product teams. As the announcement put it:
“We launched the OpenAI Deployment Company as a standalone business unit so it can develop the operating model, pace, and customer focus this work requires.”
The launch is backed by partnerships with a consortium of investment firms and consulting partners, including TPG, Bain Capital, Brookfield, and Advent International, as well as the likes of Goldman Sachs and SoftBank.
AI Race Moves Up the Stack to Services and Workflow Redesign
For customer experience and contact center leaders, the announcement indicates how the enterprise AI market is evolving beyond model access alone. Vendors are increasingly competing on deployment expertise, workflow redesign, integrations, and change management — areas that many enterprises continue to struggle with after initial generative AI pilots.
In its announcement, OpenAI said its engineers would work directly with “business leaders, technology leaders, operators, and frontline teams” to redesign workflows around AI systems.
The move also places OpenAI in more direct competition with Anthropic’s expanding enterprise strategy. Anthropic has previously outlined plans to significantly scale up its enterprise support operations while introducing updated Claude models aimed at workplace productivity. The company said it had grown from fewer than 1,000 business customers to more than 300,000 globally as enterprise demand has accelerated.
Anthropic has since continued expanding deeper into enterprise verticals, particularly legal services and financial services. The company has announced new financial services agents and legal sector integrations for Claude, including connections to platforms such as Thomson Reuters, Everlaw, Box and DocuSign.
That shift reflects a growing realization across enterprises that deploying AI into production environments requires significantly more than model procurement. OpenAI stated:
“As models become more capable, businesses can apply AI to larger, more important parts of how they operate. The work now is helping organizations rethink critical workflows around intelligence that can reason, act, and deliver measurable results.”
But when it comes to implementation, organizations often face challenges involving data integration, governance, employee adoption, orchestration across channels and workflow redesign, especially in customer-facing operations such as contact centers and support environments.
The customer experience sector has become one of the most active areas for enterprise AI deployment, with organizations pursuing agent assistance, automated quality management, conversational analytics, workflow automation, and AI-powered self-service initiatives. However, many deployments remain fragmented or stuck in pilot stages.
As model capabilities are becoming commoditized, OpenAI’s latest move indicates that the company sees enterprise execution as a key differentiator in the next phase of AI adoption. According to the announcement:
“From the beginning, we have believed that building powerful AI models is only part of the work. Real impact comes from helping people and organizations use those systems safely, effectively, and at scale.”
The strategy also reflects a longer-term positioning effort around enterprise AI infrastructure. OpenAI said the deployed engineers will help customers build systems aligned with the company’s future model roadmap, enabling enterprises to adapt faster as new capabilities and deployment approaches emerge.
The company stated that customers would be able to “move faster from day one, spend capital on durable systems, and stay ahead of competitors by building around the capabilities that are coming next.” The approach indicates that OpenAI is aiming to position itself as a long-term operational partner for enterprises seeking to continuously evolve AI deployments rather than implement isolated point solutions.
