TikTok has announced a multi-year global partnership with the NBA and WNBA to enhance online fan engagement.
With online sport engagement now rocketing to new heights, leagues are looking beyond traditional broadcasts to meet fans inside the social platforms where highlights and community conversations around the sports are already taking place.
For CX and community engagement leaders, the partnership raises bigger questions about how sports organizations can turn fragmented digital interactions into more connected, participatory fan experiences.
Rollo Goldstaub, Global Head of Sport at TikTok, said the agreement reflects the platform’s growing role in connecting basketball culture with creators and live-game discovery.
“This partnership shows how central TikTok has become to the way fans discover and engage with basketball around the world,” he said.
“As the NBA and WNBA share game highlights, creators and fans can join the conversation around the biggest moments in real time, and TikTok GamePlan carries that same discovery straight through to tune-in, giving fans a direct path from the feed to the broadcast.”
Connecting Beyond The Matchday Moment
Sports organizations are rethinking how they engage fans as audiences are increasingly experiencing moments through social platforms.
In fact, TikTok revealed that nearly half of its more than one billion users follow basketball content, while one in three users express an interest in the NBA.
Furthermore, since the start of the year, NBA content interest has increased by roughly 30% and interest in the WNBA has grown by nearly 15%, with the leagues reaching more than 30 million followers on TikTok.
Creator commentary, fan discussions, and game highlights are now part of the overall experience, where fans can stay connected throughout the week in online communities, compared to previous experience evolutions where audiences were forced to wait until game day.
While leagues have more opportunities than ever to reach audiences, those interactions are still spread across multiple platforms, many of which they do not fully control or understand.
For sports brands to respond to these audience demands, creating more digital touchpoints increases the complexity of managing the fan experience, where a supporter might and interact with players across several social platforms, leaving valuable customer data scattered across disconnected systems.
Derek Slager, Co-Founder and CTO of Amperity, previously discussed with CX Today how fragmented fan experiences limit sports organizations from delivering personalized engagement at scale.
“Any component that may cross multiple vendors, there might be three different point of sale systems represented in various parts of that fan journey. Who knows how they got their tickets whether they were resold, if there’s merchandise food and beverage,” he explained.
“It’s super unrealistic that somebody in their spare time is able to comprehensively bring together data from 20 different systems, put that all into a well-vetted fan 360, and then make great business decisions on top of that.”
Using Social Platforms As Fan Hubs
To reduce friction, the global partnership between TikTok, the NBA, and the WNBA combines official league content, creator access, and live game discovery through TikTok GamePlan.
This approach is designed to create a more connected fan journey that keeps supporters engaged throughout the fan journey.
Furthermore, the partnership involves a creator-first approach where selected TikTok creators will receive access to marquee events to capture event experiences to give audiences authentic, personality-driven content, alongside official league coverage.
As the sports fan experience becomes more participatory, building the NBA and WNBA’s approach around these behaviors will aim to foster ongoing community conversations
In fact, users who watch sports content on the platform are 42% more likely to tune into live games, with TikTok GamePlan directing NBA and WNBA fans to in-app destinations to reduce friction in the fan journey, moving users directly from discovery to finding information without leaving the platform.
The success of the partnership has already demonstrated notable success, as the use of TikTok GamePlan during the 2026 NBA Finals generated 497 million impressions through its Anchor + Detail Page, driving more than 426,000 referrals via the league’s Tap to Watch feature.
Bob Carney, NBA Senior Vice President of Social and Digital Content at TikTok, highlights the role TikTok plays in helping the leagues reach new audiences and create more connected fan experiences.
“TikTok has become one of the most powerful cultural platforms in the world, helping a new generation of fans discover the NBA and WNBA,” he said.
“This partnership gives us an even greater opportunity to meet those fans where they are with compelling content that celebrates the game and provides them with a seamless option to tune-in to the live broadcast.”
For CX leaders, these results illustrate how social platforms are evolving into measurable engagement ecosystems where opportunities for customer discovery and commercial interest happen within a single environment.
The partnership has also expanded advertising opportunities with TikTok Pulse Premiere, enabling brands to place campaigns alongside premium NBA and WNBA content at moments when fan attention is predictably high.
The inclusion of the WNBA has also meaned new opportunities to grow women’s basketball audiences, as 64% of women use TikTok as their preferred destination for sports content.
Today, sports organizations are moving beyond one-way content distribution toward integrated fan experiences, allowing community engagement, content discovery, advertising, and live viewing to reinforce one another.
