For the last year, the biggest question facing Zoom wasn’t about video quality or user growth; it was about money. Specifically, how does a company that gives away its flagship AI feature for free actually monetize the technology?

Zoom’s Q4 2026 earnings call provided a possible answer, and it isn’t in your weekly team meeting. It is in the contact center.

While the AI Companion remains a free retention play for standard users, Zoom’s ‘AI monetization engine’ has come to life within its Customer Experience (CX) division.

The company reported that Zoom Contact Center (ZCX) Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) accelerated in Q4, driving high double-digit growth, driven primarily by paid AI features.

The Real Monetization Engine: Zoom Contact Center

The narrative that Zoom is just a video conferencing utility is outdated. The earnings data shows a decisive shift toward CX as a primary revenue driver.

Michelle Chang, CEO at Zoom, noted that the Contact Center is where the company sees the “most immediate pulls” of incremental AI monetization. This isn’t theoretical pipeline growth. It is closing deals now.

Every single one of Zoom’s top 10 deals this quarter included paid AI components. Furthermore, seven of those deals represented competitive displacements of legacy CCaaS vendors. This signals that enterprises are not just experimenting with Zoom for CX; they are ripping out established providers to get it.

Virtual Agents Are the New Closers

The standout performer in this shift is the Zoom Virtual Agent (ZVA).

Automated customer service has moved from a nice-to-have to a deal-breaker. ZVA was included in four of Zoom’s top 10 CX deals in Q4. This proves that enterprises are willing to pay for automated, AI-driven customer service that reduces human workload.

ZVA is acting as a beachhead for expansion. Once an enterprise trusts Zoom to handle automated interactions, they are more likely to adopt the full CCaaS suite.

The ‘Custom’ Upsell

Zoom has also clarified its tiered AI strategy. The standard AI Companion is free, but ‘Custom AI Companion’ is the paid upgrade that unlocks enterprise value.

This paid tier connects with third-party applications, workflows, and enterprise knowledge retrieval. It allows businesses to tailor the AI to their specific data, which is a critical requirement for large organizations.

Zoom reported that Custom AI Companion contributed to significant deal closures in Q3 and Q4, validating the model that businesses will pay for AI when it integrates deeply with their proprietary workflows.

Zoom Q4 2026: CX Growth Highlights

While the broader earnings report showed mixed results with EPS missing forecasts, the CX division provided the bullish signals:

  • ZCX Acceleration: Contact Center ARR is growing in high double-digits.
  • Competitive Wins: 7 of the top 10 deals displaced competitors.
  • AI Attachment: 100% of the top 10 deals included paid AI.
  • Phone Pull-Through: 6 of the 10 largest Contact Center deals also included Zoom Phone, proving the platform play is working.

Analysis: The Answer to the Monetization Question

Investors asking how does Zoom monetize AI?, might just have got their answer.

It is not about summarizing meeting notes for knowledge workers. It is about deploying automated agents that resolve customer issues without human intervention. The acceleration in ZCX ARR proves that while Zoom’s meeting dominance is about retention, its future growth engine is firmly planted in the contact center.
